See you later LS-WHO!!
Hey friends! What a crazy week here at UA! Halloween and quite possibly the biggest game of the season happened in the same week, and I am so excited to get to tell you how I got to celebrate it! Alabama faced off against the LSU tigers in Bryant Denny and let's just say it was one for the books. Now, I know this is my second post and I am talking about Alabama football... again, but let's just say this gameday was a LOT different than the last...
Before I get into my gameday activities let's talk about the significance of this game. First off, just like with Tennessee, LSU beat us last year. I know, it's crazy right? So, while we were on a revenge tour, LSU was hoping for the same outcome as last year. Especially since this game was a big decider on the CFP playoffs. Seeing as how Bama had one loss on their record already, they could not afford another loss if they still wanted the chance to make the playoffs, but LSU was wanting to knock Bama off the road to the natty. So, you could say the game was kind of a big deal.
With big games like this, that only means one thing... ESPN College Gameday was coming to town. This was the second time College Gameday came to TTOWN and it is very rare they go to the same school twice. If you don't know who College Gameday is, boy, are you missing out. College Gameday is a group of broadcasters that go to a specific college campus each week and host the live show at the school. It consists of analysis of the upcoming games that day, fun activities provided by the broadcasters and of course getting to listen to one of the greatest coaches of all time speak... Nick Saban.
Now, let's get into what I did this first Saturday in November football game.
Now, the gameday festivities did not start on Saturday like normal, at least for me they didn't. Friday afternoon, I got the great opportunity to meet and talk with Rece Davis, and for those of you confused on who that is... you are missing out. He is one of the most famous broadcasters on College GameDay and one of the reasons why he is so great is because he got to attend the best school ever, Alabama. He is nothing short of phenomenal in what he does and is a huge role model to me and other aspiring broadcasters in the sport media field. I was given the opportunity to listen to him talk about his life as a broadcaster and give advice to students, like me, wanting to go down that same route. It was amazing and I am so lucky to go to a school that provides students like me with many opportunities to learn and grow.
After my meet and greet with Rece Davis, I decided I was going to College Gameday no matter what. So, I called one of my friends and we got to work on getting the stuff we needed for the show. We went shopping and got our supplies to make our Gameday sign. After we finished our sign, we realized the time and how there was no way we would be sleeping. We were planning on getting at least a couple hours' worth of sleep that night, but we indeed did not. We stayed up until we left to get in line for College Gameday which was 3 AM but with our excitement, it was like two kids opening up presents early Christmas morning. We got to the Quad around 3 and found a spot on the grass to stake out until morning. Now, some might call us stupid or even foolish, but we called ourselves loyal Bama football fans through and through.
When we got to College Gameday there was already groups of people lined up at the front. And the show didn't start until 8 AM. So yeah, we had a long morning ahead of us. But it was well worth it, because we ended up being front and center in the pit and we were able to get the famous Home Depot hats signed by Harry Douglas. We got to experience the famous Pat McAfee almost miss the show because he was running late. But I mean who can blame him? 8 AM might be considered too early but for football? Never. We also got to witness McAfee get undressed in the freezing cold weather, but if you know anything about him, he loves Alabama just as much as any other fan, if not more.
We even got to see Lee Corso's famous gameday pick, and let's just say he picked right this time...
After Nick Saban got to the show and talked about the upcoming game, we decided we were going to head back to our apartments and get ready for the football game. At this point, it had been 26 hours since I had gotten some sleep, and if only I knew how much longer I was going to go without it.
Once I got to my friend's apartment, we started getting ready for kickoff which started at 6:45 PM. Once we got ready, we went and tailgated with a couple of friends and family and watched a couple of other games going on before we left to head into Bryant Denny for the football game. We left around 5 to get to our seats in the student section and to put it simply, we did not leave our seats until the game was over.
The entire game was back and forth between teams. Once LSU got the ball, they scored. Once Alabama did, they scored. At halftime the game was tied 21-21. Then after the half? Alabama DOMINATED LSU both offensively and defensively.
Jalen Milroe led the Tide to victory in what was quite possibly one of his best games so far in his college career. He had 219 yards in passing and 155 in rushing along with becoming the first QB at Alabama history to have 4 rushing touchdowns in a game. You could say he balled out against LSU.
Terrion Arnold also showed out defensively for the Tide in the first play of the fourth quarter. LSU's QB takes the snap and throws it to his receiver, but Arnold got his interception with the help of Dallas Turner and the play ignited the whole stadium and was one of the biggest plays of the whole game and shifted the momentum even more.
Once again, Dixieland Delight was nothing other than incredible in Bryant Denny Saturday night. The crowd went crazy the entire game and even helped cause a false start on the LSU offense in the second half. Now that is what we like to call, Alabama football.
The game ended with the score 42-28. Alabama is now 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the SEC. Alabama football was still just that, Alabama football. We sang Rammer Jammer to all of the LSU fans who thought they could come and disrespect Alabama and our traditions, but they left Tuscaloosa realizing their hopes for anything other than just a regular end of the season bowl game was over and that Brian Kelly's "southern accent" would still never be real.
After the game, my friends and I went back to the apartment and talked and hung out until sleep became the inevitable. When I got home, it had been a whopping 42 hours since I had seen my bed and closed my eyes, but I honestly couldn't imagine doing the weekend any other way. It was, by far, the best place to be. And if you weren't there, you missed out on such an amazing night.
